What makes a charity effective?
We look for a strong evidence base to ensure the charities we support are reliably creating positive outcomes. Interventions that are backed by rigorous experimental evidence such as randomised controlled trials (RCTs) are the gold standard.

To maximize impact, we prioritize simple, low-cost interventions (e.g., mosquito nets, vitamin A pills) in developing regions. There, even modest resources can make a substantial difference by meeting critical needs. This generally leads us to partner with charities outside Hong Kong.

We determine if a charity is positioned to leverage increased funding for growth or is operating at a capacity where marginal returns would diminish in the short term.

The charity evaluators we trust
To identify the most impactful giving opportunities, we consult trusted, independent charity evaluators who invest thousands of hours into finding where donations can do the most good, often identifying programs that are many times more effective than average. These impact-focused organizations prioritize the tangible good achieved per dollar donated, rather than relying on financial metrics alone.
From their highly effective recommendations, we then select partners whose work aligns with our purpose and fits within the Hong Kong charitable landscape.
While traditional charity evaluators focus most on metrics like overhead and financial health, impact-focused charity evaluators focus on good done per dollar donated – which accounts for (but is not limited to) overhead. In short, these evaluators ask a deeper question: What’s the actual impact of donating to this program or fund?
We currently primarily leverage the work of GiveWell for our global health recommendations. They have been researching charities that can save or improve lives the most per dollar for over a decade, backed by 70,000+ hours of research each year. GiveWell publishes transparent reports on their process and evaluations, and regularly review the cost-effectiveness of past recommendations they’ve made.
We also use evaluations from Giving What We Can, The Life You Can Save, and Happier Lives Institute to support additional recommendations and body of evidence.
